Features:
If the complexities of capturing, editing, and creating videos on your PC, as well as authoring DVDs or video CDs (VCDs) seem overwhelming, MedioStreams neoDVD plus ($30 street) may be for you. If you can live with rudimentary video-editing features, youll be thrilled by how quickly and capably you can burn a DVD or video CD. With write-once DVD blanks now hovering at about $5, you can afford to back up each tape you make with your video camera in its entirety instead of painstakingly (and time-killingly) editing footage together to fit on as few DVDs as possible.
Video editing and DVD authoring often require separate programs with dissimilar interfaces. neoDVD provides both in a single program, although with an emphasis on authoring. One of its neatest tricks is going directly from camcorder out to DVD+RW (or to VCD if you have only a CD burner) without first having to dump your cameras contents to your PCs hard drive. You plug your DV camcorder into a PCs IEEE 1394 connector (or your older 8-mm camcorder into an analog capture card), click a few buttons, and get a disc made on the fly. Virtually every disk we burned worked. You can save your edited movies to disc as MPEG-1, MPEG-2, or DV files, but you cant write them back out to a VCR or camcorder.
neoDVD lacks automatic scene detection, a hindrance to editing. In our experience, such as with the recent Editors Choice product Pinnacle Studio 7 (Video-Editing Software, April 23, 2002; or www.pcmag.com/pinnacle7), this feature was a huge timesaver, since scene detection is typically frame-accurate in finding the first and last frames of a scene. neoDVD does let you break a long file into chapters, but the break points are based on time, not scene content.
The other editing tools in neoDVD are pretty standard: titling, chapter menus, transitions, music and voice overlays, and preburn previews. neoDVD poses strong competition to such editing and authoring programs as CyberLink PowerDirector 2.0 Pro and Pinnacle Express. If you want to make quick discs from your videos and leave the editing for a rainy day, neoDVD plus is all you need.
